Development Officer I, Foundation Relations Officer | Summa Foundation

Summary of Position: The development officer, foundation relations is responsible for establishing and maintaining foundation relationships and managing grant submissions including all research, grant writing, cultivation and stewardship activities. Minimum Qualifications: 1. Formal Education Required: a. Bachelor’s Degree in communications or related field. 2. Experience & Training Required: a. Minimum three to five years prior communications, public relations, nonprofit or similar work experience. Experience in foundation relations and grant writing, fundraising database software (Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising software preferred) b. Computer experience with proficiency in Excel, MS Word, Powerpoint, and Adobe suite experience preferred. 3. Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications: a. Strong project management skills and ability to manage several projects simultaneously. b. Understand how various roles, responsibilities and players, both internal and external, contribute to the mission of the organization. c. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness. d. Approaches new ideas or challenges with a sense of possibility, openness, and positively. e. Proven track record in planning and achieving short-term and long-term goals and can communicate information about progress toward goals with supervisor and the team and ability to take direction from multiple leaders. f. Excellent interpersonal skills and can build relationships with colleagues across roles, and teams, demonstrating a commitment to collaboration. g. A team player who expresses genuine interest in the team’s well-being, and proactively models organizational customs, beliefs, and values. h. Ability to work with a diverse population and a variety of stakeholders and audiences including colleagues, donors and volunteers. i. Exceptional communication and organizational skills. 4. Level of Physical Demands: Sedentary: Exerts up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. Essential Functions: The following job specific requirements should discuss the essential duties and responsibilities required of the position. They should not replicate those duties and responsibilities discussed above. 1. Oversee all corporate and foundation relationships for the Foundation; responsible for identifying and cultivating local, regional and national relationships to the point of solicitation; Prepare, write and submit grant proposals. 2. Manages all grants for both pre-and post-award from private foundations, corporate foundations and organizations in conjunction with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research 3. Responsible for identifying and maintaining a list of funders and potential funders as well as identifying and communicating with the appropriate internal stakeholders; serves as a generalist with a wide breadth of knowledge about the programs, services and projects of Summa Health 4. Assist with major gift proposal development in collaboration with fundraising team 5. Develop and implement strategies to increase foundation support of Summa Health priorities in conjunction with priorities set by System Director, Development 6. Identify priorities and interest areas of foundations and match them with Summa Health programs consistent with these priorities and interest areas 7. Identify and seek to cultivate potential new institutional relationships through ongoing research, networking, visits, phone calls, and correspondence, including letters of inquiry and grant proposal requests 8. Maintain schedule and data reporting for grants and gifts 9. Prioritize efforts for local, regional and national collaboration on grant applications 10. Maintain an updated list of corporate and foundation proposals being sought by Summa Health 11. Work collaboratively with internal and external sources for research and grant writing activities on an as needed basis 12. Work with Summa Health staff to ensure accurate gift entry and record maintenance of all corporate and foundation records, including the reconciliation of non-Development generated grants 13. "Working with the Chief Officer/Resource Development & Marketing, the Sr. Regional Development Executive will be responsible for creating strategies to solicit donations from individuals, organizations, and corporatations in support of a nonprofit organization providing mental health services to the public. The main focus of the development executive is the identification, engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and recognition of philanthropy at the major gift ($10,000+) level. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, results-oriented professional with strong organizational skills who possesses: • A professional, confident and driven work style with a competitive spirit • An outgoing personality; outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present a compelling case to a variety of constituents • Strong public speaking ability • Ability to interface, engage, collaborate with, and motivate diverse volunteer and donor groups • A high level of perseverance and resourcefulness in the face of challenges. Key duties include: 1. Developing and managing a portfolio of potential individual and corporate major gift donors and prospects. 2. Working with resource development staff and volunteer leadership to coordinate signature fundraising and recognition events and an annual giving program. 3. Communicating fundraising goals effectively and engaging organization staff, volunteers and volunteer Board members in fundraising activities. 4. Encouraging, explaining, and soliciting opportunities for planned giving. 5. Meeting or exceeding attainment goals established together with organizational leadership. Must have a BA. 3-5 years direct fundraising experience is required, preferably in major gift fundraising. CFRE or CFRM is highly desirable. Knowledge of fundraising strategies, donor database software, and donor relations unique to the nonprofit sector is a plus. Benefits options include health, life, pension, paid time off, and more.
